IMPACT STORIES

Hybrid learning journeys for emerging managers at scale

Equipping nearly 1000 new managers with purpose-driven leadership through immersive, experiential learning

Highlights:
  • Long-standing partnership developing a pipeline of future-ready leaders
  • Focus on rapid change, building high-trust teams, and leading with clear purpose
  • Nearly 1,000 managers developed since 2023

Caterpillar needed to equip emerging managers with both hard leadership skills. Without sacrificing impact, the company wanted to give a large returning cohort of new managers the opportunity to build the skillset, toolsets and mindsets required for collaborative decision-making, managing uncertainty and acting with urgency.

WDHB co-designed a hybrid program of 10 modules, 6 of which draw from WDHB’s proven signature leadership experience and global exchange partnerships, addressing critical leadership competencies: leading with purpose, managing change, building psychological safety and collaboration, fostering belonging and trust, and acting with urgency.

Every cohort of 35 is consistently executed, and the modules continuously refined. The program maintained rigor and impact while scaling to 150-200 managers annually, demonstrating that human-centered learning doesn’t sacrifice efficiency.

Leadership Lessons From The New Pioneers Of Space Exploration

Developing director-level high potentials to lead transformation through immersive lessons from NASA and commercial space innovators

Highlights:
  • Three-day customized immersive experience at Kennedy Space Center and commercial space facilities in Cape Canaveral
  • Exclusive access to NASA’s first female launch director, retired astronauts, and commercial space executives
  • Creating lasting internal dialogue on innovation leadership
  • Designed as capstone to year-long Senior Leader Development Program for 20 high-potential directors

As one of America’s leading insurance groups, Progressive sought to prepare its next generation of enterprise leaders—director-level high potentials across product management, claims, and IT—to excel in strategic planning, building coalitions, and leading change. Following successful Apollo Experiences for GM-level executives in 2017 and 2019, Progressive needed a fresh, engaging approach to leadership development that would differentiate from traditional classroom training while reinforcing competencies from their internal development program. The challenge was creating an experience that would bridge existing learnings with deeper exploration of change leadership and cross-functional collaboration for leaders who would soon advance to executive roles.

WDHB designed the Launch Point Experience as a three-day immersive capstone journey exploring the future of space flight as a metaphor for innovation and leading change.

Participants gained rare access to Kennedy Space Center facilities and heard from visionary leaders revolutionizing space travel—including NASA’s first female launch director who guided teams through the end of the Space Shuttle era, retired astronaut David Leestma, and executives from leading commercial space companies pioneering space tourism. At the historic NASA KSC Observation Gantry overlooking the Apollo 11 launch site, leaders connected lessons on organizational change, resilience, and risk-taking to Progressive’s transformation journey. Tours of commercial space manufacturing facilities revealed approaches to fostering innovation climates and ‘two-way door’ decisions that enable calculated risk-taking.

Throughout the experience, WDHB facilitators and senior Progressive business leaders guided discussions applying aerospace industry insights to participants’ own business contexts, introducing frameworks like the S-Curve Innovation Model that continue to shape internal strategy conversations around innovation stages and leadership effectiveness.

“The most unique, forward-thinking leadership experience I’ve attended.”
